Music Notes
Posted on 06/07/2021
There is a lot to celebrate regarding the 2020-2021 school year. Even though there were many barriers, the students did a great job in music class whether fully virtual, in-person for music on a cart in their classroom, and finally, in-person in the music room. Students adapted to all types of situations this year and nothing stopped them from growing! For the last few years, I have summed up the many performances and events that took place musically at Houdini, so no reason to stop this tradition even though we were not able to have concerts or events.

Thank you for all of your support and enjoy reading some of the “notable” 2020-2021 accomplishments:

● Over 500 music kits and buckets were distributed to families in September and beyond for students to be able to play their own instruments in music class while virtual and in-person. Houdini students should be ready to play any grade-level rhythm pattern after what seems like HUNDREDS of “Play-alongs” we did together! They loved the kits and begged for a play-along or two in every music class! This tradition will probably stay with us for years to come!

● Our 3rd and 4th grade classrooms performed a beautiful Virtual Winter Concert in December. The 3rd graders played along with “Trepak” from the Nutcracker with their music kits and the 4th graders performed sign language to “Cover the World With Love.” It was a special video to watch knowing that we were going to be together again soon!

• Houdini’s PRESTO! Chorus participated in an online choir “club” after school once a week, 2nd semester. In these Google Meets, the 5th and 6th grade singers worked on “The National Anthem Project” in which the students listened to many different styles of performances of the Star-Spangled Banner including Super Bowl performances and military ceremonies. They discussed the different styles of singing and how to appropriately lead the National Anthem. The final result was a compilation video they made of themselves reading bits of history about the poem and the song and recording themselves singing the somewhat difficult tune. Watch the video here.

● The Houdini Strings, led by Mrs. Malone and the Houdini Band, led by Mrs. Juhl, continued instrumental lessons throughout virtual learning and in-person. Band ended the year with 23 students and strings with 20 students strong! Way to go... starting virtual and coming back fully in-person all while being responsible for practicing!

● The entire school studied and participated in the virtual “Hansel and Gretel” virtual interactive opera, created by the Opera for the Young. Thank you to our Houdini PTO for bringing this to Houdini!

● RED CARPET WEEK-Pianists of all ages performed for their classmates during music class. An annual tradition! We have so many talented pianists at Houdini! If you are interested in finding a piano teacher for your child, please contact Mrs. DePasse! Enjoy this Red Carpet Week Video!

● Over 15 Houdini Boys and Girls auditioned for our local Girl and Boy Choirs and will start next fall! We are proud of you!

I will never forget this year and am looking forward to making music in the 2021-2022 School Year!

Sincerely, Mrs. DePasse
